Program Title:
How to Design in a Lean Environment
Speakers:

Todd Henderson is a Senior Associate at Boulder Associates with 15 years of architectural experience, mainly on healthcare projects. A self-described 'change agent,' Todd led Boulder Associates' shift to BIM software and has now set his sights on furthering beneficial lean-inspired transformation of his company's culture. Why lean? "It finally dawned on me that these ideas could lead the way to the promised land ... a land where I don't have to work evenings and weekends." Todd recently relocated to the Boulder Associates' San Francisco office. When he's not working evenings and weekends, Todd practices giving presentations without reading from PowerPoint slides.

Stan Chiu is a Vice President at RTKL Associates with more than 15 years of architectural experience. Stan adapts the Lean production management model to the design and delivery of healthcare, higher education and public facilities. He is a consensus builder and promotes an integrated team approach, enlisting the knowledge and expertise of planners, designers, contractors, owners and consultants early in the design process to deliver an efficient cost effective facility. Stan’s projects have received national and local AIA awards. Stan is a member of Lean Construction Institute and is a select member of a national leadership council on Lean Principles. Additionally, he has lectured and published extensively on Lean
Principles.

Katherine Blume is a Project Director at Southland Industries with 17 years of Design Build Mechanical system experience in many different market sectors including healthcare, hospitality, commercial and high tech. As a contributing member to the lean construction movement, she sees lean as a means to provide our customer with better value – project that are delivered on time, on budget and with reduced waste. Just as important, lean provides a way for all of the participants to align around common goals; reducing the conflict on projects and allowing us to enjoy the process of creating building that exceed our customer expectations.
Abstract:
The design and construction industry are changing. In order to compete in this market the design community needs to be nimble, creative, collaborative, and more efficient. This presentation will discuss at the changes the design industry is anticipating and how Lean can be an agent for the change. The presenters will discuss tools and process that are being used in the industry and show current case studies on how Lean is being used on the front end of a project.

Lean Construction Institute (LCI)
The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.
The Los Angeles Area Community of Practice is being developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the LA Area. We invite project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share and develop a lean community in the LA Area. For further assistance please contact lci-los-angeles@leanconstruction.org
